The Shahs are over the moon and waiting for their bundle of joy. After six years of desperately trying to conceive, Andheri residents Manish Shah (34) and wife Vaishali (29) are proud parents-to-be. "It's the biggest thing that has happened to our family in 35 years," said Manish.
The couple was beleaguered by family histories of infertility on both sides. "We tried private clinics twice before we got pregnant and it drained us financially. I took a loan for the infertility treatment and I'm still paying it off. There was a time when we had given up, but then Vaishali's cousin recommended Deccan Infertility Clinic at Dadar and we decided to give it a final shot," said Manish who works at a securities trading firm.
Their first intrauterine insemination (IUI) cycle was a success and the Shahs opted for it again because of the cost. "The centre offered us IUI at Rs 10,000 per cycle whereas we were paying around Rs 50,000 per cycle at the last clinic," said Manish.
"The success rates of IUI can be as high as 40 per cent, and the Shahs were lucky to figure in that category," said Dr Sulbha Arora, scientific director of Deccan Infertility Clinic.
What is IUI?
'Washed sperm', that is, spermatozoa which have been removed from most other components of the seminal fluids, can be injected directly into a woman's uterus in a process called intrauterine insemination (IUI).
