Former Punjab DGP S S Virk (pictured above) is likely to succeed A N Roy as the Maharashtra police chief, following yesterday's Bombay High Court ruling that set aside the latter's appointment as the Director General of Police.

The other contenders for the post are IPS officers Suprakash Chakraborty and J D Virkar. All three officers are senior to Roy.

Virk is currently the director of Police Housing. He joined the IPS at age 21, which makes him the senior most among the contenders. He was on deputation to Punjab during the militancy, but was charged with corruption in 2007 by the Akali Dal government. He was then repatriated to Maharashtra, his parent cadre.

The HC quashed Roy's appointment as DGP, saying the procedure of his appointment in March 2008 was arbitrary and in violation of Supreme Court guidelines.

The high court has given the state four weeks to decide the next DGP.

The state is likely to appeal in the SC against the order.
