GRP gives lady black eye for putting her feet up

Shabana Ali Mohammad (39) had to pay a heavy price for sitting leisurely in the waiting room at the CST railway station yesterday.

Miffed that she was sitting with her legs on the attendant's chair, a Government Railway Police (GRP) lady constable allegedly assaulted her, giving her severe bruises and ran away with her mobile phone.

Shabana, an advocate from Goa, was waiting to board the 11 pm Konkan Kanya Express to Goa with her mother, when constable S Jadhav entered the room and asked her to get up from the chair as she was not "sitting properly".

"Around 9.15 pm, this lady entered the waiting room and rudely asked me to vacate the chair. I asked what the problem was, to which she replied she was a police woman (not in uniform) and asked me to speak in Marathi.

As I stood up, she started abusing me and as I took out my cell phone to record her, she grabbed it and hit me. She also banged my head against the wall and ran away with my mobile phone," complained Shabana.u00a0

However, the GRP police had a different story to tell. According to them, Shabana did not follow Jadhav's orders, which led to an exchange of words.

"Shabana was arrogant and hit Jadhav first and the constable retaliated. Also, she did not take the passenger's phone," said an on-duty GRP official, who also maintained that the lady constable was in her uniform.

Meanwhile, Police Inspector P Yeram of GRP police at CST, said, "We will be taking the complaints of both the woman."

Shabana, who refused to go to the police station, was later taken to St George Hospital. She suffered several bruises on her head and complained of shoulder and jaw pain. She was later even sent to J J hospital for CT scan and X-ray.
