Unhappy with way homosexuals are portrayed on screen, filmmaker Rituparno Ghosh to concentrate on directing films on gay issues
After having played a gay man in his acting debut Just Another Love Story, Bengali director Rituparno Ghosh has decided to largely focus on directing films about gay issues.
Ghosh came to this decision when he realised that most Indian filmmakers barring maybe Onir are afraid to portray gay issues in the right light.
Tough choice
"It was not an easy decision to make, but it's an issue that has bothered me for a long time.

And the misrepresentation of gay characters in films like Page 3 and Fashion, coupled with my own experience of playing a gay character strengthened my resolve to tackle homosexual subjects in my films," said Ghosh.
My movies will also be about the heterosexual world's perspective of the homosexual hemisphere," said the director.
Ghosh is looking for actors who understand the theme and stars who can spread the message to a maximum number of people.
Beyond gay
Ghosh also clarified that despite his decision, he is still open to other topics for his films. "I'm not saying I'll make films only on gay rights and issues.
But for now, that's what consumes my attention and that's what my films will be about.
If Pedro Almodovar can be such a strong universal political voice in Spain, why can't I make myself heard on gay issues in Bengali?"
