Harassed for dowry, woman burns self

Harassed for years over dowry, a 30-year-old mother of two set fire to herself in front of her husband and in-laws at her home in Thakur Village on Saturday, said cops. According to the police, the victim Asha, who got married to Umesh Dawre five years ago in an arranged marriage, had come to the city and settled down with her husband and his family.u00a0

However, soon after the wedding, she was harassed for money and in the complaint filed by Asha’s father, her in-laws had demanded Rs 5 lakh from her. Unable to give in to the family demands of Rs 5 lakh, Asha often was harassed and there were several quarrels in the home. Her father added that Asha wasn’t happy and was often a victim of physical as well as mental torture. In his complaint, he also said that the in-laws had said that Asha should either give them the money or buy them a home in Kandivli.u00a0


“The victim, staying with her family, burnt herself in front of them. Her husband Umesh also received 10 per cent burn injuries,” said Sanjeev Nankar, inspector from Samta Nagar police station. He added, “Based on the complaint filed by the victim’s father alleging harassment and dowry demands, we have arrested Umesh, his brother Ganesh, sister Sunita, mother Tarabai and other family members.”

While the police have booked the accused under sections including 304 (B) (where the death of a woman is caused by any burns or bodily injury or occurs otherwise than under normal circumstances within seven years of her marriage), 306 (abetment of suicide), 498 (A) (subjecting a married woman to cruelty) and 34 (acts done by several persons in the commission of offences) under the Indian Penal Code, the victim’s family alleges that Asha did not burn herself but was set on fire by her in-laws. u00a0One of them said that in the past, she had approached them for money saying that her in-laws would kill her if she did not give it to them. u00a0
