Have cops caught the real Kurla rapist?

DNA of paedophile arrested on January 4 matches with samples of earlier victims

After detaining seven persons and claiming to have nabbed the Kurla serial rapist last year, the Mumbai police may have some explaining to do with their latest claim.

A heavy deployment of cops in and around Nehru Nagar in July last year led to the arrest of Javed Shaikh

On Tuesday, the police arrested Harshad Hunumatha, after he was caught red-handed while attempting to rape a seven-year-old girl at a secluded spot in Nehru Nagar, Kurla.

Police officials have booked Harshad for attempt to rape and claim that the results of the DNA test match those taken from earlier victims of the sensational Kurla serial rape and murder case.

New challenges

Hunumatha's arrest may throw up new challenges for the Kurla police before they present a watertight case before the prosecution.

Dilip Sawant, DCP (Zone VI), said that he had ordered a DNA test of the suspect. "Initial investigations indicate that the DNA samples match," he said.

Serial rapist

The Kurla serial rape and murder episode had created panic in Kurla (east) and surrounding areas last year, and Mumbai police launched a massive manhunt for an unknown serial rapist and killer after three victims were found raped and murdered.

A heavy deployment of police personnel in and around Nehru Nagar in July last year following the incidents, led to the arrest of Javed Rehman Shaikh (19), a technician with a cable operator in the area.

According to the police Javed was on their list of suspects since the third rape took place in June last year.

They had kept a watch on his activities since they noticed that he was a loner and used to move around the locality suspiciously.

Javed was interrogated and subjected to DNA testing, which according to police officials threw a positive match with an eight-year-old victim, Nusrat Shaikh.

The Kurla Files

Three girls all under the age of 10 fall prey to rape and murder between February and June last year, creating panic in the area.

Heavy police deployment in the area to solve the case.

Police interrogate over 2,000 people in the area, including some policemen and their relatives since second victim was found on the roof of a police quarters building.

Javed Rehman Shaikh (19), a technician with a cable operator, was arrested on charges of raping and murdering an eight-year-old girl in suburban Kurla last year.

Over 29 police teams, including a special team headed by two Joint Police Commissioners, worked continuously to solve the remaining cases.
