High-profile gangsters to be shifted to Taloja

Mohammad Ajmal Amir aka Kasab, the lone terrorist captured during the 26/11 attacks, will soon have exclusive rights to the high security anda (egg) cell in Arthur Road jail, according to DNA report.

Security concerns are forcing jail authorities to shift all 16 high-profile prisoners currently lodged there to Taloja prison in Navi Mumbai.

Ajmal will be the only prisoner in the cell, located in a corner of the jail premises. He will later be shifted to a special bullet-proof cell that is being built for him in the Tada court premises, behind the jail.

Those imprisoned in the anda cell are fugitive gangster Chhota Rajan's lieutenant DK Rao, Arun Gawli, Abu Salem, aides of gangster Chota Shakeel, some of the accused in the 2008 Malegaon blast, and members of the Indian Mujahideen. Along with them, hundreds of prisoners from the barracks, will also be transferred to Taloja.

"The (Arthur Road) prison is overcrowded. In view of perceived security threats, we are shifting prisoners to Taloja," a senior jail officer said. The official capacity at Arthur Road is 820 but it houses over 1,800 prisoners.
