Sheetal Mafatlal, according to sleuths of the Air Intel-ligence Unit (AIU) at Mumbai airport, has been unable to fathom her detention and that the night that followed her arrival in Mumbai went in explaining the rationality behind her arrest.

"She spent the night on a couch just trying to explain that the jewellery belonged to her and was not recently bought," said an officer.

Being in an air-conditioned room of the customs office in Marol, the night went pretty well for Sheetal, who according to officials present "fully cooperated" without throwing tantrums or swearing at officials.

Sources said, Sheetal kept claiming that the jewellery in her possession was old and had been purchased in India. Her contention was that she was merely bringing them back.

Customs officials, however, said, "Had it been true, she would have to fill up a form at the time of leaving Mumbai declaring the jewellery (if valued over Rs 20,000) that she was carrying.

This was, however, not done. The jewellery, handbags and clothes are together valued at Rs 53,67,508."

No crying

A stressed out Sheetal was led to the staff washroom on four occasions.

"She wanted to splash water on her face so that she could feel relaxed," said officials. Sheetal was provided with a woman officer at all times. She, however, mildly refused the eatables offered.

The AIU sleuths also took pains in explaining the evaluation process to Sheetal. "We told her that legal authorised evaluators of jewellery were like public prosecutors in the court of law," said officials.

After Sheetal's arrest on Sunday, her statement was recorded. Though she did not cry at any point, Sheetal was definitely taken aback by the ongoing procedural activity, said AIU officials.
