Taking a leaf out of Union Finance Minister Pranab Da's book, Maharashtra's Ajit 'Dada' Pawar has decided to intersperse his budget speech, scheduled for March 23, with Abhangs, form of devotional poetry.
Guess who the Deputy Chief Minister is banking on to liven up his budget speech? It is Tribal Development Minister Babanrao Pachpute, who is known to be a scholar on Abhangs.

Ajit Pawar has asked the Tribal Development Minister (right) to add the poetryu00a0 as he believes that it will liven up the atmosphere in the Assembly.
According to NCP sources, Pawar has asked Pachpute to write devotional poetry that could be interspersed in his Maharashtra State budget speech.
Since most finance ministers, including Union Ministers P Chidambaram and Pranab Mukherjee, prefer to intersperse their budget speech with witticism or lade their speech with phrases and quotations to liven the atmosphere during budget presentation.

Pawar may have thought rendering Abhangs during the speech would enliven the atmosphere in the House.
Now, Pachpute will have to take the trouble of finding the right Abhangs which could be suitably incorporated into the budget speech.
According to NCP sources, Pachpute is very modest about his knowledge of Abhangs. He tells party workers that whatever Abhangs he knows are not his creations. The devotional poetry is the creation of Tukaram Maharaj.
Asked whether he has been assigned to write Abhangs by Pawar, Panchpute refused to comment. NCP sources, however,u00a0confirmed that the Deputy Chief Minister had indeed requested Pachpute to dish out some Abhangs for his budget speech.
The tribal development minister has been participating in the Pandharpur spiritual walk, which attracts half a million devotees, for years.u00a0

Devotional poetry
Abhang or Abhanga (in Marathi)u00a0 is a form of devotional poetry sung in praise of the Hindu god, Vitthala. Known as Vithoba Bhajan's focus on he inward journey, Abhangs are more exuberant expressions of the communitarian experience.
Abhangs were first sung by the Varkari saints such as Tukaram in Marathi. Tukaram was a seventeenth century poet, who lived in a town named Dehu, which is located near Pune.
