Initial investigations into the murder of three-year-old Karishma Chavan, who was found dead at a vacant plot in south Mumbai, have indicated that it could be a case of a serial killing.u00a0
Police are treating the case as a murder, and are waiting for the autopsy report to learn more about the cause of death. So far, there are more questions than answers about the perplexing discovery, which has shaken the residents of the area.
Residents of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Nagar in Cuffe Parade, from where the minor went missing staged a roadblock yesterday in protest of the apathetic attitude of the police in the case.
Parents of Karishma also joined the protest outside Cuffe Parade police station questioning why the unknown accused was still not nabbed.u00a0
Earlier on November 13, while investigating the murder of Jagriti Patel, cops tested the DNA of nearly 300 persons. In spite of that no breakthrough was made in Patel's case. Accusing the cops of a casual approach, Jagriti's father voiced his anxiety.
"I lost my daughter and still after three months, the cops have not nabbed the accused. Now another girl has been killed and it will continue if the pervert is not apprehended soon," said Ramesh Patel, a seafood vendor.
Explaining the similarities in the case, a police officer from Cuffe Parade police station said, "Both Karishma and Jagriti had skull injuries, Jagriti was raped and preliminary findings in Karishma's case indicate rape, earrings of both victims were missing. Moreover, Jagriti's father and Karishma's grandmother both work at Sassoon Dock. There is some connection with the docks. Maybe the perpetrator works there."
The case
Karishma's grandmother had taken her to the docks on Tuesday, where she works as a prawn cleaner. After some time, she realised that the little girl was missing. After searching around for some time, they lodged a missing persons complaint with the cops.
While the cops quickly swung into action, DCP Chering Dorjee (Zone I), asked his men to have a look around the plot, where Jagriti's body was found. The cops found Karishma's body at the same spot on Wednesday afternoon.
