It appears that Mumbaikars have been cursed to suffer never-ending water woes. The latest ones to undergo this ordeal are the 200 families of the Jaybharat Society, located on the 3rd Road at Khar West.

It has been almost a week since these familiesu00a0- spread across 65 buildingsu00a0-- have been receiving foul smelling, brown-coloured water. Moreover, they are claiming that this dirty water has led to an outbreak of waterborne diseases in the society, and is taking a toll on their health.

for a week

Apathetic BMC
Despite repeated complaints, BMC's lackadaisical approach has failed to relieve them of their ordeal. The only thing the H ward officials have done so far is to visit the site.

What has added to the residents' frustration is the constant delay in work due to Diwali vacation and weekly offs. They further revealed that though sophisticated cameras have been installed and trenches being dug to locate the problem, the officials have failed to find a solution to restore the clean water supply.

Residentspeak
"Time and again we had been informing the authorities that the pipes supplying water to the society are old and corroded, and run through the water drains," said Surinder Khubchandani, a resident of the society, adding that residents have taken to drinking bottled water.

Another resident, Rajesh Ahuja, said, "My mother is down with a stomach ailment. Getting clean water is our basic right and this issue must be resolved soon."

The other side
Commenting on the allegations levelled by the residents against them, officer Binkare, water department, H West ward, stated, "It is only the pipeline supplying water to the 3rd Road that has cracked. It could be because of some construction work in the area. The repairing work has already commenced. We are taking all possible measures to fix it."
