Mumbaikars will have to use less water from July 1, as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) announced on Friday that the lake levels have reduced in the last fortnight.
"With no rains, there is reduction of lake levels, so there is need to cut water supply by 15 per cent from July 1," informed MM Kamble, hydraulic engineer. The BMC says that the existing water levels can supply continuous water to the city only till August 15, after which there will be an emergency situation.

Mumbai receives 3,350 million litres daily from Modak Sagar, Vihar, Tulsi, Tansa, Upper Vaitarna and Bhatsa lakes. For now, the BMC will draw water from its reserved quota till there is sufficient rainfall and the lake levels come to normal.
"The city has received only 10 per cent of rainfall. To relax the water cut, it has to rain at least 1,200-1,500 ml in the initial week of July," said Kamble.
