Politicians carry anti-diahorrea pills on campaign trail to take care of tummy upsets and public embarrassment

There's a lot more to our netas than just fiery speeches and assurances. They not only take good care to look presentable, but also ensure an upset stomach does not cause embarrassment in public.

With erratic campaigning schedules and little control over their diet, politicians are popping anti-diahorrea pills.

Unavoidable

Dr Mohan Warang, consultant to CM Ashok Chavan, told MiD DAY that politicians carried tablets like Domstal, Lomotil and Roko during the campaign trail since they can't afford to fall ill on tour.

"These tablets prevent diarrhoea that is often a problem when one eats in villages or at roadside stalls.

There is often no option of home-cooked food for candidates." He added that dissolving fruit salts, ayurvedic digestives and antacid syrups are also popular.

Dr Deepak Amrapurkar, consultant gastroenterologist with Bombay Hospital, said, "Excessive consumption of medication that counters acidity can lead to vitamin deficiency problems or can even lower the stomach's resistance to infections like typhoid in the long run."

He added that the easiest way to keep acidity at bay was to have small meals frequently and to stay awake for at least two hours after meals.

Sardar Tara Singh, Congress candidate from Mulund, always carries a bottle of mango juice with him. "Singh is a diabetic and needs to keep a quick sugar fix around," said a close aide.

Other politicians did not disclose if they popped pills for acidity problems. "Abu Azmi goes to the gym every day and does not need any medication," said a Samajwadi Party worker.

Santosh Awatramani, the Professionals Party of India candidate from Malabar Hill, said he plays squash to keep health problems at bay.

Foreign Leaders in Shipshape

> US President Barack Obama is a fitness freak. He visits the gym six times a week and lifts weights, rides the stationary bike, hops on the elliptical and runs on the treadmill to keep in shape. He also loves a game of basketball.

> Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin often flaunts his toned torso on trips. He is a black belt in judo and attributes his fitness to sports activities.
