Marathis voted for me in large numbers: Nirupam

Newly elected Congress MP Sanjay Nirupam today said Marathi-speaking people had voted in his favour in large numbers.

"Apart from minorities, North Indians and Maharashtrians have voted for me in large numbers and it is evident from the number of votes I have got from Marathi-dominated areas of my constituency," he said.

Nirupam, elected from Mumbai North constituency, said Shiv Sena and Raj Thackeray-led MNS should not insult his Marathi voters with their public fight.

The Shiv Sainik-turned-Congressman said he condemned attempts to brand him as "anti-Marathi". "I have ideological differences with MNS and Shiv Sena and I speak against their ideologies.

Where is the question of being anti-Marathi? Shiv Sena should introspect why it lost Marathi votes. Even MNS does not have the backing of all Maharashtrians and the election results have proved it," he said.

Nirupam attributed his victory to the inclusive ideology of the Congress party, leadership of Sonia Gandhi and the developmental works of the Manmohan Singh Government.

"Both the Thackeray cousins (Raj and Uddhav) should allow the ongoing development works in Mumbai to continue unhindered," he said.
