Ten days after mid-day published a front-page story about the 10-acre Pramod Mahajan garden in Dadar being ready but not inaugurated for the past eight months, the garden will be inaugurated today, which happens to be the late Pramod Mahajan’s death anniversary.

It will be inaugurated at the hands of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Industries Minister Subhash Desai and the deceased BJP leader’s wife Rekha Mahajan.

On April 22, mid-day had reported about the inauguration of a lush garden in the heart of the city being stalled due to technical delay and bureaucratic apathy. The garden was initially developed by Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)’s Sewerage Operations (SO) department, which had been maintaining it until recently, in August 2014.

“I would like to thank mid-day for highlighting this issue. Mumbaikars will now get to avail one of the largest open spaces and green lungs of the city. I have been told that the delay happened due to contractors bidding lower than the minimum estimate,” said MP Poonam Mahajan.

The delay
In order to inaugurate it, the garden had to be handed over to the Civic Gardens departments. But since the latter had not zeroed in on a contractor until last month, the hand-over got delayed. “We have finally issued a work order to the contractor now and the garden has been handed over to us from the SO department,” said Vijay Hire, superintendent of Civic Gardens departments.

The garden consists of lush lawns, a lotus pond, a covered prism-like structure to house smaller shrubs and a hillock lined with potted plants. The SO dept has retained all the trees in the erstwhile sewage treatment plant. The premises also consist of a cafeteria and toilets.
