Mumbai: Cement mounds at stations cause more people to stumble

Days after mid-day reported how a woman got seriously injured at Andheri station after she tripped over a cement heap on the platform, yet another citizen came forward with a story of another concrete mound at Marine Lines station that caused him, as well as several others to take a fall.

These mounds have been lying forgotten on platforms ever since the railways completed the platform levelling work, and according to officials, it is older citizens who are at particular risk of getting hurt because of this.

mid-day had highlighted the incident at Andheri, wherein a 48-year-old woman suffered a ligament tear in her right hand, causing her to miss work for a week (‘Remove cement mound at Andheri station before it hurts more people’, August 15).

At the time, the stationmaster had assured that the mound would be removed by Monday, but this has not happened yet. Western Railway (WR) authorities said the mounds had been left over after extensive platform raising work and would soon be removed.

“We got to know about the issue through this paper and the same has been communicated to the division. During platform levelling work, cement accumulated at certain points and later solidified. Within two or three days, it will be cleared,” said Gajanan Mahatpurkar, senior Public Relations Officer, WR.

The second case took place two months ago, when Mahim-resident Dominic Fernandes (57) was at Marine Lines for a function. In a hurry to catch the local back home, he failed to noticed the concrete lump near the stairs on the platform.

“I don’t think anybody would have been able to see the mound in the crowd. I was focused on catching the train when I suddenly tripped and fell. I didn’t sustain any severe injury, but had badly hurt my knees and shin, especially due to my age. It must be levelled so that no senior citizen or pregnant woman suffers due to it,” said Fernandes.

GRP constables who were patrolling the platform confirmed that the mound, located on the southern side of the platform 4 causes many such incidents repeatedly. “Youngsters or those familiar with the mound jump over it, but senior citizens and disabled people face difficulties at times. Two to three people trip over it every day,” said a constable.
