Mahesh Tanna, a social worker who is also the complainant in the case, alerted the Powai police about the racket. With this tip-off, police approached Hiranandani Hopsital and asked doctors to stop the kidney transplant operation on Brijkishor Jaiswal, as the donor was not his wife, as was claimed in the documents.

Vinayak Deshmukh, deputy commissioner of police, said, “We were informed about the illegal transplant by a social worker, following which we made preliminary inquiries. After the allegations were confirmed, we raided the premises and arrested the four accused in the case.”

Agent Vijendra Bisen, and accomplices Bharat Bhushan Sharma, Iqbal Sheikh and Brjikishor’s son Kisan Jaiswal were arrested and booked under the relevant sections of the IPC and the Transplantation of Human Organ Act, 1994. They will be produced before the court today.

Suresh Gupta, youth INTUC state president, said, “A patient, hailing from South India, who was cheated by Bisen, approached us and said Rekha has made several documents to prove she is Jaiswal’s wife. We had been working on this case for the last month. After we verified all the documents she submitted to the hospital, they turned out to be fake.”

Police sources said Bisen was allegedly in touch with a hospital staffer who asked him and Rekha to come to Mumbai for a kidney transplant. They offered Rs 4 lakh to Rekha and were going to take Rs 30 lakh from Jaiswal.

All the accused were in touch with Jaiswal and his son Kisan. The cops have not caught any accused from the hospital yet. Rekha is recuperating in the hospital and her statement will be recorded once she regains consciousness.
