After mid-day’s report exposed how five ATS officials had allegedly colluded with two other men to cheat a UP-based builder of Rs 49 lakh, the accomplices, who had been at large for more than 20 days after the FIR was filed, were nabbed within hours.

A DCP-level internal inquiry was also initiated against the five officials from the Juhu (Chandan Chowkie) ATS unit who were allegedly involved in the con job.

mid-day had reported yesterday how the five officials Inspector Shashikant Jagdale and Constables Mahesh Dalvi and Santosh Sawaratkar and two others, whose names are still under wraps had hatched an elaborate plan to cheat UP-based builder Akhilesh Chauhan on the pretext of getting him a Rs 35-crore loan.

The officials had, on July 14, allegedly staged the arrest of two of their accomplices, Harish Tiwari and Hemant Joshi, who were acting as middlemen in the ‘deal’. After realising he had been cheated, Chauhan had filed and FIR against Tiwari and Joshi with the Versova police on July 17, but no action had been taken since then.

Hours after the report was published, however, Tiwari and Joshi were picked up from a state in northern India and a DCP-level inquiry was initiated against the five officials. Senior police inspector R Pawar of Versova police station said, “The two accused in the case have been caught and are being brought to Mumbai, after which they will be arrested.

They will be quizzed on the role of the policemen as well.” Officials said Tiwari and Joshi were expected to reach the city in the wee hours of Thursday.

Hope rekindled
Speaking to mid-day yesterday, Chauhan said, “I am happy that the two accused, who had been absconding for so many days, were arrested within hours because of the mid-day report. Now I am hoping that the policemen who are involved will also be prosecuted and that I will get my money back.”
