The Bhoiwada police have registered a case against unknown assailants and launched a manhunt for them. They have even made a sketch of the accused. Ganesh Kaswankar (43) is a close aide of senior Congress leader Rane. Rane is contesting the by-polls in Bandra East constituency and Kaswankar handles the maximum work for him in the election campaign.
A resident of Parel (East), Kaswankar told mid-day, “For the last 12 days, I have been extremely busy. I leave early by 8.45 am and take a train to Santacruz. From Santacruz, I go to Rane Sir’s bungalow in Juhu, and from there I leave for Bandra for election-related work. I have no fixed hours for returning home, but I have been leaving at a regular time for the past few days.”
Kaswankar left home for work at 8.45 am on Sunday. He recalled, “I was walking on the rail over bridge (ROB) at Elphinstone station. It was not crowded since it was a Sunday. When I reached the middle of the bridge, a person came from behind and put his hand on my shoulder.
The moment I turned, he stuck a revolver to my chest and fired. Fortunately the gun got locked. I was shocked, but I managed to push him away and ran down from the bridge. He fell on the railings on the bridge.”Kaswankar screamed for help and people gathered on the spot.
A biker arrived and the shooter jumped to the other side. “The shooter sat pillion and they sped off towards Prabhadevi . I called the police to the spot,” Kaswankar said. Badly shaken up by the incident, he further added, “I don’t know who is behind this attack.
I don’t suspect anyone. I want my family to be safe; my children go to school. Those people kept a proper watch on me for a few days and noted my daily schedule. They also chose to attack me on a Sunday, as the ROB is less crowded.”
