The Anti-corruption bureau laid the trap to arrest the two, based on a complaint from a 26-year-old man, who accused them of extorting money from him. Identified as Kishore Ranesh Jadhav (35) and Jagdish Dhanraj Wagh (27), the constables forced Abdul Hasan Shah, the victim to shell out Rs 5,000 and asked him to return with more money some days later.

Shah, who owns a small jeans manufacturing unit sells gutkha in Ulhasnagar for extra income. On April 5th, when he went to sell ten packets to his client as per demand these two constables caught hold of him and took him to a nearby chowky.

“The two police constables said that it is illegal to sell gutkha and took me to a nearby chowky and thrashed me. They then asked for cash. I paid them Rs 5,000 after which they took my debit card, Aadhar card and other documents,” added Shah.

The cops then asked him to return with more money if Shah wants no case against him– the sum was settled at Rs 9,000, instead of the initial demand of Rs 10,000.

“I discussed this with my friend who suggested me to approach the ACB. I took his suggestion and informed the ACB on April 7th who then laid the trap,” added Shah.

Wagh was arrested on Tuesday while he was accepting the money from Shah, on behalf of both.

Sanjay Sadigale, Police Inspector, Thane ACB said, “Later Jadhav was also arrested. We are undergoing a house search of the two accused. We are cross verifying the facts. Further investigation is underway.”

A case has been registered in Shivaji Nagar police station under relevant sections of the Prevention if Corruption Act, 1988.
