Mumbai: Two convicted for plan to target ONGC, other city spots

A Sessions Court on Thursday convicted two accused, Abdul Rashid alias Guddu and his brother-in-law Riyaz Ali Imtiaz alias Rehan, for conspiring to attack the ONGC headquarters and other spots in the city.

Judge Sanjay V Patil convicted both the accused under Section 18 (conspiracy) of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). The sentencing will be on Friday. Special Public Prosecutor Rohini Salian examined 27 witnesses for the case.

Abdul (35), a resident of Haji Chawl at Behrampada in Bandra (E), and his brother-in-law Riyaz (29), a resident of Koyla Bhavan Chawl at Ratan Nagar in Dahisar, were arrested by ATS on March 11, 2010 after suspicious phone calls, allegedly between the two accused and Abdul’s uncle in Karachi, Pakistan. The conspiracy was financed by the uncle from Pakistan.

The duo planned to set fire to a few important spots in the city, including the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) headquarters in Bandra, Gaiety-Galaxy cinema in Bandra and Thakkar Mall in Borivli.

Speaking to mid-day, Salian said, “The evidence collected and presented before the court was voice identification, the phone sets which they used to talk, which were in their names. Also the conversation about the preparations and that they wanted to run away by taking their passports with them was presented before the court.”
