According to a voter in Bandra (West), a gross violation of the election code of conduct was committed at the St Andrew’s School centre during polling hours on October 15.

The voter, who has chosen to remain anonymous, said he went to the polling centre on Wednesday and found BJP’s polling agents inside the booth using pens which clearly displayed the BJP logo as well as a picture of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“On voting day, BJP’s polling agents seated in every classroom had pens that had the party symbol — a lotus embossed on it, along with the words, ‘NAMO-NAMO’. In spite of the matter being reported to the officials, the pens were used from 7 am to 5 pm,” he alleged.

According to the election code of conduct, political workers cannot promote their party or their candidates within 100 metres of the polling centre. “I complained about this to the election officer in charge and the presiding officer at each of the assigned polling rooms.

They took the matter very lightly and seized the pens around 5 pm, when almost 90 per cent of the voting period had passed,” he added. The following day, he emailed a complaint to the Election Commission, narrating the entire incident. However, the EC is yet to reply to his letter. Chief Electoral Officer Nitin Gadre was unavailable for comment despite repeated attempts being made to contact him by this newspaper.
