Part of Aaliya Waradiya’s head and neck remained outside the elevator and were crushed by the ceiling as the lift made its way up; cops said she was standing between doors to prevent them from shutting
The Waradiya family’s dreams of seeing their daughter shine in her bridal outfit turned into a nightmare after on Sunday night, after the 23-year-old met a gruesome end in a freak elevator mishap on Sunday night.

Two residents of the Al-Muzalfa building, who were inside the lift at the time of the mishap, said the doors shut suddenly and they couldn’t save Aaliya despite trying their best to pull her in
Aaliya Waradiya, a resident of Pathanwadi, Malad (E), had gone to the building next to hers with her mother to place an order for mehendi for her wedding next week.
However, the happy moment turned into one of grief after Aaliya got stuck between the lift doors and was dragged halfway up to the first floor. Officials from the Kurar police station said that Aaliya, a resident of Humera building, had gone to Al-Muzalfa apartments around 9.30 pm to place the order.
She was supposed to go to the fourth floor. They said Aaliya was waiting for her mother to enter the lift and, hence, was standing between the doors to prevent them from closing. Aaliya was straddling a portion of the lift and the area outside, and was facing one of the lift’s doors when they shut.
Half of her head and her neck were outside the elevator and so was one leg. When the elevator started to move, part of her head and neck were crushed by the ceiling outside, and the lift got stuck between the ground and first floors because her body came in the way.
Cop speak
Senior Inspector Jaychandra Kathe from Kurar police station said, “This is a case of accidental death. Aaliya was standing between the doors and was calling out to her mother, asking her to hurry up, when the doors suddenly shut. She got dragged halfway up to the first floor and sustained fatal head and neck injuries.
The family members rushed her to the nearby S M Hayat Hospital, where she was declared dead on arrival.” Another official said that after the doctors pronounced Aaliya dead, the family decided not to register a police case and asked them for the death certificate so that they could initiate the burial process at the earliest.
However, the doctors refused to issue the certificate claiming that it was a police case and informed the Kurar police. After an Accidental Death Report was registered, Aaliya’s body was sent for post-mortem to Shatabdi hospital in Kandivli.
The family requested the police and hospital authorities to ensure that only a female doctor performs the autopsy. The body was handed over to the Waradiyas on Monday morning. A doctor from Shatabdi hospital said, “Primary report confirmed that Aaliya sustained fatal injuries from head to neck. Even her legs were grievously injured.”
Aaliya is survived by her father, a mobile shop owner at City Centre in Mumbai Central, mother and her siblings two sisters and two brothers. Just like her family, Aaliya’s in-laws-to-be, the Baradiyas, are in a state of shock.
Witnesses
When the incident occurred, two of the building residents were inside the lift. They told the police that they tried to pull the girl inside the lift, but in vain. They said Aaliya’s head and neck got crushed between the ground and first floor.
