Mumbai: A middle-aged woman from suburban Chembur, accused of stealing jewellery from her landlord's place, has alleged that she and her family members were "brutally" beaten by four policemen.

According to police, the woman, identified as Geeta More, has filed a complaint with Chembur police station stating that the policemen entered her house and thrashed her along with her brother and father.

"According to the complainant, the incident took place last week, when the four policemen came to her house and thrashed her for stealing jewellery from her landlord," a police officer privy to the investigation, said.

DCP (Detection-I) M Dahikar confirmed that an inquiry has been initiated into the case.

Talking to PTI, DCP (Zone VI) Sangramsinh Nishandar said, "Based on the woman's complaint, we have initiated an inquiry against the policemen."

More's landlord had lodged a case in connection with the jewellery theft. "The jewellery is still missing and More remains an accused in the theft case, which was filed by her landlord," Nishandar said.
