Mumbai Crime: Betting racket busted in Malad flat

A special squad busted an international cricket betting racket in the wee hours of yesterday, with the arrest of three suspects, including the son of a betting lynchpin from a high-profile Malad society.

Following a tip-off received by Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria, the squad swung into action and raided Manohar apartments in Malad (E) and seized Rs 17 lakh, cellphones, LCD screens and laptops. Sources from Mumbai police said the arrested accused were handed over to the local police station.

During investigations, it was revealed that one of the accused is Jayantibhai Jain alias Jayanti Malad, son of Hitesh Jain, a known face among bookies in the country’s betting circle. They said the place raided is a centre for international bookies, which means bets are accepted from bookies from Pakistan, Dubai, Australia and other countries.

The police team was taken aback when they came to know that the kingpin of the betting operation was Jayanti Malad, the person who fixes the rate per ball, over or run. The other two accused are his aides. Sources further revealed that when cops entered the apartment, they found out that the bookies were using more than 70 mobile phones and three laptops.

When they scoured the apartment, they found the cash, 40 kg of silver and two LCD screens apparently used to monitor matches. “It cannot be ruled out that match fixing is going on via these bookies. We produced them in court and secured their police custody for a few days. We are investigating the fixing angle, and it is expected that in coming days the bookies might open their mouths on the subject of match fixing,” they added.
