The owner of a neighbouring jewellery shop, Sandip Bhai, had sent R15 lakh with two of his workers to Jain for safekeeping. Jain kept this money in the same wooden drawer, and left at 9 pm after shutting the shop.
Early morning next day, a paanwala, who has his outlet near Jain’s shop called him up and said that his shop’s shutter had been broken open.
When Jain arrived, he found that the money had disappeared. He immediately informed the V P Road police about the same and a case was registered under Section 457 (lurking house trespass or house-breaking by night in order to commit offence), 380 (theft in dwelling house) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention), of the IPC.
A police officer from VP Road police station told mid-day, “We have arrested the two accused on Saturday. They were presented at the Magistrate’s Court where they were remanded in police custody till August 5. We are investigating this case and if they have been involved in any robbery before.”
