The Kurla police have arrested a 50-year-old watchman of a girls’ hostel at Kurla, for allegedly taking an 11-year-old inmate to his residence and sexually assaulting her. According to police officials, the accused Lal Mohammad, on the pretext of helping her get photocopies, took her to his residence.

An officer from Kurla police station said, “The incident had taken place in the month of March but it was revealed last week when the survivor spoke of it. The survivor told her elder sister about the incident, following which she went to the hostel to inquire with the warden.”

The survivor’s family, along with the warden lodged a complaint against the accused. The survivor, in her statement to police said, “While I was going to take photocopies, the watchman offered to help me. He misguided me and took me to his residence at a chawl.”
Police said the accused, Mohammad removed her clothes, and while he was sexually assaulting her, she raised an alarm, due to which he panicked and took her back to the hostel. He threatened her not to reveal the incident to anyone. The official further added, “The hostel is meant for poor girls, whose parents can’t afford to take care of them. We are investigating whether he has assaulted any more girls from the hostel.”

Senior police inspector Lalsaheb Shette from Kurla police station said that they have arrested the accused and their investigation is in progress. The accused has been booked under sections 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) of the Indian Penal Code along with relevant sections under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act 2012.
