Four days after a pet dog died an agonising death following an acid attack, the police yesterday arrested a 25-year-old resident of Jacob Circle.
Last week, Prince, a two-and-a-half-year-old Labrador, was quietly sitting in his cage when Chhotu Verma, a resident of Mahalaxmi, who used to drink with his friends at the spot, opened the cage and threw battery acid on him. Screaming in pain, Prince ran away. His owner, after spending hours looking for Prince, found him a long distance away and rushed him to the animal hospital at Parel. His skin was burned and he died a few days later.
Activists from People for Animals, an NGO working for animal welfare, filed a FIR under Section 429 of IPC and Section (ii) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. "We have arrested the accused for animal cruelty," said the investigating officer.
This was not the first time that the accused had tried to harm the dog. Prince's family has alleged that he had earlier tried to beat up their pet.
"Prince was gifted to me by a friend and he was a family member. We never thought he would die such a horrible death. As there was a family function in the house, we had kept him in the cage. And, Chhotu, along with his friends, opened the door and poured acid on him," said Ashish Ghodke, the pet parent.
