Samaritan on autopilot
We often crib at the lack of Good Samaritans in Maximum City. However, we did meet one recently. We had hailed an auto during our weekend grocery spree even as both hands were struggling to pull off a juggling act with multiple shopping bags.
Somewhere along the way, we lost track of our cellphone’s whereabouts amid the excess baggage. When we reached the next spot on our weekend routine, we paid our fare to a familiar-looking autowallah from our neighbourhood. By the time we were done at our final stop, we hailed another auto and began to hunt for our cellphone.
Panic struck as it wasn’t to be found, though we scrabbled through all the contents from the bag. When we dialled our number, someone answered on the second ring. Turned out to be the familiar autowallah. “Madam, aapka phone rickshaw mein hi reh gaya. Phone wapas karne ke liye hum aapke building ke paas khada hai,” he said.
Thrilled to bits, we handed over a handsome tip to this Samaritan as he flashed his trademark smile.
Big Mac for the Mumbai Museum
Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (CSMVS) found mention in a press release, which announced that Director of the British Museum, Neil MacGregor was to leave the iconic British Museum at the end of 2015.
Neil MacGregor
While the press release mentioned the director’s reasons for stepping down, it added MacGregor saying that he will be involved in a few projects despite not working full-time with the museum. In news that will please many Mumbaikars, he dedicated an entire paragraph to his support and backing of Mumbai’s landmark museum.
He wrote, “In Mumbai, I look forward to working on the presentation of world cultures with the CSMVS Museum and its Director Mr Sabyasachi Mukherjee under whose tenure it has emerged as one of the finest and most active museums in South/South East Asia.” Bravo.
Seawoods you in Uran
For those of us who spend most of our lives in or near the city, a place like Uran seems really way out and out of the way. But no fear, with people and infrastructure growing inexorably, expansion is inevitable and soon, places like Alibag and Nhava Sheva will be very much part of the Mumbaikar’s landscape.
The proposed Seawoods-Uran railway corridor is inching towards that day, with the single tender for it having been finally opened the other day by the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO). The tender is for designing the stations on the 27-km railway corridor.
Why only one tender? Well, apparently, though the town planning agency wanted at least three tenders, only one consultant had come forward though tenders were invited thrice. As per the tender, the consultant has to design any one of the four stations falling under phase 1 of the project (eventually there will be 10 stations).
These four are Sagar Sangam, Targhar, Bamandongri and Kharkopar. Names that sound strange to us, but will probably be as familiar to us as, say, Nallasopara or Bhivpuri, which were once unfamiliar too. And the Uran fast train may one day become as packed and in-demand as the Khopoli fast is today.
