Mumbai Diary: Monday musings

Mumbai's date with the radio
On July 23, 1927, the Indian Broadcasting Company was inaugurated at Radio House, Apollo Bunder and regular broadcasting commenced thereafter.

This service was set up on an experimental basis in Bombay and Calcutta simultaneously, based on an agreement between the Government of India and a private company, called the Indian Broadcasting Company Ltd.

A P&T line to a transmitter located at Worli connected its broadcasting studio. At that time, the acoustics for the studios, like hanging of coloured drapes, created a huge interest among the Indian press.

Sound memories
Spanning two decades, Anup Jalota’s lavish birthday-parties hosted every year, were must-go-to musical mehfils attended by a galaxy of celebrity singers including Pankaj Udhas, Talat Aziz, Hariharan, Bhupinder-Mitalee, Richa Sharma, Madhushree and Shaan, not just attending but putting in extempore ‘live’ performances.

Following the untimely passing away of his ailing soul-mate Medha in November last year, this time on July 29, Jalota has decided to refrain from any revelry and remain at home. The bhajan samrat confided in this diarist, “Almost my entire birthday party was meticulously planned each time by Medha.

Since destiny snatched her away, I am now left with no planner. As my inspiration, she will always remain a vital part of my psyche.” Jalota has now decided to dedicate an annual special Medha Jalota Memorial Award for promising classical dancers. “That’s because my wife was a passionate lover of classical dancing.

The jury-panel for this award will comprise some of her close friends like Uma Dogra and Daksha Mashruwala, who are eminent dance exponents,” discloses the emotionally-distressed singer whose mission now is to “keep myself fully occupied with my vocal music profession”.

Let’s kick it in Powai
There’s a new way to train in the outdoors. This diarist came across a fitness routine called Integrated Fitness Solutions that will be held at Kick, Powai, every Monday, Wednesday and Friday between 6.30 am and 7.30 am.

Fort’s Poornima will open in Lower Parel
One of our favourite South Indian restaurants in South Mumbai, Poornima in Fort, will be opening a second outlet opposite Peninsula Tower in Lower Parel.

So, all those who have offices and homes in and around the area, can now make a beeline to tuck into their delicious fare, from Bisi Bele Bhath (one of the best in Mumbai), to their dosas, upma, Goli Bhaji and South Indian Thali (for just Rs 74!), filter coffee and more. Simbly superb!

Holy spirits!
As Nashik gears for the Kumbh Mela, a big-ticket wine manufacturer decided to make the most of the timing by wooing folks with packages to the vineyard, for wine-tasting adventures et al. Now, that’s what we call spirited thinking, no?
