Mumbai Diary: Wednesday Dossier

Brunch with Avinash Chandra
Kala Ghoda’s DAG Modern opened its doors to the notes of spirited jazz and lively chatter on Sunday at a brunch preview of artist Avinash Chandra’s works.

The retrospective was spread across three floors of the gallery, and there were opportunities aplenty to sit by a sunlit window with a flute of champagne and gaze at his works.

Chandra, reputed for his sexual motifs and renditions of the female body, is a lesser-known name on home turf, primarily because he has lived and exhibited abroad.

Dressed to kill, DAG’s head of exhibitions Kishore Singh spoke of how he had to spend months in London with the Chandra estate in order to put together an impressive collection.

Singh had to fly back to Delhi as soon as the brunch came to a close, and we hope we will have the privilege of a walkthrough soon.

When the old boys rocked Bandra
December is school reunion season, with old boys and girls having get-togethers to mark school and college milestones.

The St Mary’s (ICSE) 1965 batch ‘boys’ met at a quaint little bungalow in Bandra to celebrate their 50 years of passing school.

School uniforms — white shirt and dark pants with a maroon tie, with the school emblem on it, were the apparel of choice for the album picture. Amidst the mirth, girth, merriment and memories, there were moments of sobriety too. There was a two-minute silence observed for all the 1965’ers who had passed on.

Then, after a stipulated programme, the bar was open and there was much ribbing and a rambunctious vibe as the batch of 1965’ers rolled back the years. School was always cool, no?

To Papa, with love
It’s a year away (next December), but we hear that former MP Priya Dutt, is penning a biography of her father, the late actor and politician, Sunil Dutt.

She had published a memoir of her parents (Sunil and Nargis, 2007) but this one will be about her father. Born in 1929 in Pakistan, Sunil Dutt turned actor in 1955.

His life, from his courtship with Nargis (who he rescued from a fire on a film set) to his struggles with his son’s drug addiction and later, his arrest in the 1993 blasts case, will feature in the book.

The publishers, we hear, approached Priya earlier this year. And to those who wonder if she is qualified to write, well, besides being Dutt’s daughter, she is also has a sociology degree from Sophia College, a PG Diploma in TV production from the Center for Media Arts, New York City. Does a biopic beckon?

The duo presented sounds from West Africa, other Jazz-playing nations, American folk and Indian classical at the session.

Sing, share and swing with Santa
As the season of sharing nears, good samaritans spreading love and cheer swing right back in action.

Pick from 75 stalls that sell home made Christmas goodies and decorations. Don’t miss out on the yummy fare at the live counters and carol singing.
