World’s best in India
At a recent fashion event held in the city, the diarist happened to come across a beauty queen who wore a crown so large that the person seated right behind her could hardly see the stage.
When we took a closer look at a her sash, it read, Miss India Worldwide Canada. We are not quite sure of its merit. A garishly dressed lady followed the diva around, picking up the trail of her dress as she walked ahead.
The duo conveniently seated themselves in the front row of the venue, usually reserved for VIP guests. When the organisers politely told them that those were not their seats, they discussed and deliberated and were finally shown to seats located a few rows behind.
Within seconds they returned to tell the organisers that they couldn’t spot the stage clearly from where they were seated and that they deserved to be in the front row. Sigh! another case of demanding reservation?
Having a Wales of a time
Short film from India and Kashish 2015 winner Sundar has been shortlisted to compete in the International Iris Prize Festival, an international LGBT short film festival.
A still from the film, Sundar
Sundar, which is directed by Mumbai-based Rohan Kanawade, will compete with 29 other entries from across the globe for the £30,000 prize at the festival that takes place from October 7 to 11 this year in Cardiff, Wales, (UK). Sundar had won the Best Indian Short Narrative film prize at Kashish, the queer film festival this year.
Sundar is a story of a cross-dresser and his need for acceptance by his family and society. “The feeling of Sundar being nominated for the Iris Prize is splendid! It is a large canvas for an independent filmmaker like me to show my work,” said Kanawade.
“I hope, similar to the way Jayu, the film’s protagonist, dares to be himself amongst the ‘conservative’ crowd, the film will also shine amongst the international crowd!” he finished. From Mumbai to Cardiff (Wales) it is such a sundar journey.
