The city — sliced, diced and served with a dash of sauce
Film treat at NCPA
Film buffs have a new avenue, as well as venue, for their needs. The National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) in the city has launched a new monthly series of films, called NCPA-PVR Rare, picked by PVR Cinemas for their Director's Rare programme.

The first of the films will be screened on March 12 at 6.30 pm at the NCPA's Little Theatre in Nariman Point. The film is Nightcrawler (117 minutes), starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Rene Russo among others. Nightcrawler is about Los Angeles denizen Louis Bloom, who survives by scavenging and petty theft, and stumbles into a new career as a cameraman.
Armed with a camcorder and police scanner, he begins nocturnal forays across the city in search of shocking and grisly crimes. When he catches the eye of a shopworn news director who welcomes the chance to raise her station’s ratings, Bloom goes to increasingly greater lengths to catch the “money shot”.
Admission is free, on a first-come-first-served basis, with preferential seating for NCPA members till 6.20pm.
Safe to come out now
Maybe the cattle grapevine has been buzzing with news of the President okaying the ban on cow slaughter and beef consumption. We spotted this cow sauntering confidently along platform number 2 at Kalwa station on the Central Railway line a couple of days ago.
The cow knows where she is going. Pic/Shrikant Khuperkar
As the platform is easily accessible from ground level, the bovine old dear had no difficult steps to negotiate. But where was she heading so purposefully? Towards the ladies first-class compartment, maybe? After all, it is achchhe din for cows, as we heard on Twitter.

Go ‘Green’ in Bandra
There are times we take a break from looking at things and people around us, and bury our noses in a book. One of our recent reads was The Green of Bengal, which we ordered online (sorry, brick-and-mortar stores!) and the good news is that it is being officially launched in Mumbai next week. It’s also a chance to check out a new bookstore, Title Waves, at Pali Hill, Bandra.
The book will be launched there on March 13 at 6.30pm, and author Gautam Benegal will be in conversation with journalist and bibliophile Carol Andrade. Though Benegal’s stories are about Calcutta (oops sorry, Kolkata), he is a Mumbai resident and we hope a collection of our favourite city's stories emerges from his keyboard soon.
