Assistant Sub Inspector Nanda Naik from Charkop Police was managing the crowd near the Jalaram pond. Due to the Ganpati processions, there was heavy traffic on the road, and Naik told one of the devotees — Pahal Kalu Singh Rawal – to stand on the footpath and not block the traffic.

But Rawal went berserk and snatched the ASI's lathi and began to hit him with it. A few passers-by rushed to inform other police officers about the violence. The accused was overpowered by the cops and arrested.
