The police immediately swung into action and called him up on the number he had given in his message. Simultaneously, SP Manjunath Shinge was informed; as per his instructions, an officer kept the man on the line and got his address, where another officer was sent. He was then taken to the police station along with his family; they were counselled and allowed to leave. The incident happened on November 13.
Shinge said, "I issued instructions to the Nalasopara police, who sent a team to his house and managed to stop what could have been a very serious incident." Inquiry revealed that the senior citizen had taken VRS years back and had been staying with his wife and two daughters in Nalasopara West. He alleged that his family wouldn't take care of him or even give him food or wash his clothes.
His wife, however, said that after retirement he had started blowing money off on alcohol and wouldn't give her anything for household expenditure. "We brought the family to the police station and asked them to make efforts to get along," said inspector Bharat Jadhav from Nalasopara police station.
