A former Doordarshan anchor and yoga teacher was knocked down by a coconut tree that fell straight on her head while she was on a morning walk in Chembur. The victim is currently in the ICU at Sushrut Hospital. Her husband has blamed the BMC for not permitting the tree to be cut.

The incident took place at 8 am on Thursday, when Kanchan Nath (58) was walking near her home. As she walked past Chandroday Society, a coconut tree there came crashing down on her head, knocking her down on the road.

Passers-by pulled her out from under the tree and rushed her to hospital. The entire incident was captured by a CCTV camera installed at a nearby shop.

Rajat Nath, Kanchan's husband, told mid-day, "This incident happened because the BMC did not allow the society to cut the tree, despite being informed that it could fall any time."

Local corporator (ward 152) Asha Marathe said, "A team from BMC refused permission to cut the tree, as they had found it in good condition."
