"The court has recorded statements of 39 witnesses and it is likely to record the statement of the accused under section 313 of CrPC next week," said defence lawyer Prakash Salsingikar.
Under section 313, the accused is given an opportunity to explain in person any circumstances appearing in the evidence against him.
The crime branch of city police arrested the accused Chandrabhan Sanap (28) last March, two months after the offence.
A 23-year-old woman software engineer who worked with TCS here had gone missing from Lokmanya Tilak terminus in suburban Kurla after arriving by train from Andhra Pradesh in the early hours of January 5, 2014.
According to police, Sanap spotted her sitting alone at the railway station and offered her lift on his two-wheeler.
He then took her to an isolated spot along the highway and strangled her when she resisted his attempt to rob her.
Police later said they suspected a rape too. Her body was found off the Eastern Express Highway in suburban Bhandup on January 16, 2014.
