Faces smeared with traditional 'gulal' and celebrations were witnessed across the city and in many cases residential colonies hired water tankers to douse revelers with water to beat the summer heat.
In the BDD chawl at Worli, revelers burnt a 45-foot effigy of arrested terrorist Mohammed Ajmal Amir Kasab. Residents said the effigy represented the anger and distress of the people over the carnage that killed over 160 persons and injured 300 others.
Security across Mumbai was high with many police personnel patrolling the city's streets and traffic police officials present in large numbers to deter drunk revelers from driving.
Two minor incidents of violence between two groups celebrating Holi were reported at the north west suburb of Goregaon and the north east suburb of Deonar, police said.
In Motilal Nagar in Goregaon two groups clashed over spraying of colours on each other and six persons were detained. In Deonar, one person was injured in a clash between residents of Hiranandani building.
