Earlier on Friday, the civic body had stated that it would wait till June 15 to see the situation. However, on Monday civic officials from the hydraulic department admitted that dipping lake level is indeed a serious situation.

"Till now we were supplying 3,400 million litres per day (MLD) of water all over the city. But from midnight today, this number has been decreased to 3100 MLD. Thus, it will be about 300 MLD less in the daily water supply," said S Korlekar, Chief engineer, hydraulic department, BMC.

Mumbai receives its daily supply of water from six lakes: Modak Sagar, Tansa, Vihar, Tulsi, Upper Vaitarna and Bhatsa, located on the outskirts and in the city.

While the water level of Vihar has reached its lowest, Tansa has water that can be used for the next few days. We expected the first showers by June first week, as this would have risen the lake levels. But since this was not the case, we have to go ahead with the water cut by Tuesday itself," said Korlekar.

Civic officials maintained that no decision has been taken on how long the water cut will continue. "We are just carefully watching the rain situation. Nothing can be said at this juncture when we will end the cut. We request people to store water and use it carefully," said Korlekar.

The Met office had earlier predicted that the rains would hit Mumbai by June 7 or 8. Now the monsoon is expected to hit the city between June 10 and 15, said Sharma. IMD officials said that Mumbai and its suburbs are expected to witness partly cloudy skies with the possibility of light showers.
