New Delhi: Khalistani Liberation Force (KLF) chief Harminder Singh Mintoo, who was arrested after he escaped from Nabha jail, was yesterday sent to seven days' police custody by a Delhi Court which noted that “custodial interrogation” of the accused was required to unearth conspiracy in the jailbreak case.

The terrorist outfit leader was arrested late on Sunday night from Nizamuddin railway station, Arvind Deep, special commissioner of police, Special Cell, said.

Additional Sessions Judge Reetesh Singh sent Mintoo to custody till December 5 after Delhi Police sought seven days' remand to interrogate him.

“I am satisfied that custodial interrogation is required to unearth the conspiracy in the case. The accused is sent to police custody till December 5,” the judge said.

Mintoo, accused in 10 terror cases, was in touch with terror groups in Pakistan, Punjab Director General of Police Suresh Arora said.

Mintoo was carrying a sophisticated semi-automatic pistol along with six live cartridges when he was arrested, Arvind Deep, Special Commissioner of Delhi Police’s Special Cell, told reporters. “He had bought a (train) ticket for Panvel and from there he had plans to go to Mumbai and then to Goa. He had good contacts in Goa since he had stayed there for 18 years from 1989 to 2007," Deep said. Mintoo planned to flee to Germany or Malaysia, where he had good contacts since he had stayed there, police sources said.

While seeking Mintoo’s remand, the police said that they needed the custody of the dreaded terrorist to know about the role of “insiders and outsiders” who assisted him and five others in fleeing from Nabha jail in Patiala.

The UP police on Sunday evening had arrested the alleged “mastermind” of the daring daylight jailbreak, Parminder Singh.

He was arrested from Kairana in Uttar Pradesh's Shamli district when the getaway vehicle — a Toyota Fortuner — was stopped at a police picket.

Parminder has claimed that eight persons were involved in the incident and the five fugitives were in Karnal and Panipat in search of a hideout, police said.
