PWD officials say nearly 100 people have tried to commit suicide by jumping into the sea from the old bridge (right) in the last two years
According to the police, the bridge has become a suicide hotspot because of the sparse vehicular movement on it. It has been learnt that the officials are planning to suggest that the PWD install steel nets along the railings to make it difficult for persons with suicidal tendencies to climb them.
“Installation of steel nets will make it difficult for people with suicidal tendencies to climb the railing and jump into the sea,” said Ram Pathare, senior inspector, Vashi Police station. Last month, three persons attempted suicide by jumping off the bridge in a span of a week. Local fishermen rescued all of them.
“Security guards do patrol the area around the bridge, but it is impossible to station a boat near the bridge for an entire day, as the water level keeps changing due to the tides. Suggestions will be made to the PWD to install CCTV cameras on the bridge,” Pathare said.
