The Rs 23-crore project, which will dilute traffic jams, is expected to be completed within a year

New bypass at Khopoli on Mumbai-Pune highway

In order to provide better connectivity between Khopoli and Lonavala on the old Mumbai-Pune highway, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has planned to construct an eight-kilometre-long bypass road. It has floated tenders to appoint a project management consultant who will monitor the Rs 23-crore project.

SB Tamsekar, Chief Engineer, Engineering Division, MMRDA, said, “We have already received the tenders from construction companies for implementation of the project. Once we get final nod from our executive committee, we will announce the project management company, which will oversee the entire process. We have now called tenders for the apppointment of Project Management Consultant for the project.”

Along this new bypass road, there will also have portions of small bridges that run over streams and rivers. Presently, the Khopoli village witnesses choc-o-bloc traffic as the old Mumbai-Pune highway enters narrow roads through this patch. This causes inconvenience to the villagers and the new bypass aims to reduce the jams.

The bypass road will have four lanes. Once the construction begins, the project is expected to be completed in 12 months, though work will halt during the monsoon season.
