After heavy rains caused the water to overflow last week, SGNP cites past and possible mishaps for barring roads leading to the picnic spot

Those who enjoy a plunge in the Magar dam in the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, an attraction for tourists and picnickers specially during monsoon, might as well find another natural swimming spot.

The dam is now off-limits to citizens and visitors.

The forest department cordoned off the road and a popular byway leading to the dam last week after the heavy downpour caused an overspill.

Security guards have been stationed at the two gateways, to prevent those venturing to the dam despite the warning signs.

SGNP authorities have also blocked other pathways by blocking them with boulders and rocks.

Other than the ways, the dam itself has been roped off to keep the picnickers at bay. Officials said that trespassers would be fined.

The measure was deemed necessary after three youngsters drowned and died in the dam during monsoon last year.

In July 2010, two of the six youngsters who had gone to Sanjay Gandhi National Park on a picnic had drowned in Magar dam while swimming.

Two out of the three deaths were due to strong currents after heavy rainfall in the forest area.

Sunil Limaye, Chief Conservator of Forests(CCF) at SGNP, said, "There have been many deaths here. We do not want more people to lose their lives. Action will be taken against those found entering the restricted area."

Officials said that revellers frequently ignore the warning signs, leading officials to take the measure.u00a0
