Pay Rs 100 fine for stopping your car on zebra crossing

From now on, you'll have to stop you car a little before the zebra crossing at the traffic signal. And if you don't, there's a hefty fine that you'll have to cough up.

After the no-honking drive, the traffic police is all set to launch a massive drive against drivers who violate the stop line which is painted before the zebra crossing as well as those who park on the crossing. Violators will be fined Rs 100 under rule 19 of the Rules of Road Regulations and repeat offenders would have to pay up Rs 300.

"Dangerous'

"Zebra crossings are exclusively meant for pedestrians and drivers have to observe restraint and stop their vehicles before crossing. Drivers in Mumbai are in the habit of crossing the stop line and also stopping the vehicle on the zebra crossing. This obstructs traffic flowing from other sides and eats up space meant for pedestrians to cross. This can be dangerous, as it can result in accidents," said a traffic police official.

Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Sanjay Barve added, "After we are through with the no-honking campaign, we will carry out a drive against those who violate the stop line and zebra crossing lines."

Meanwhile, the traffic police will continue their campaign against co-passengers in vehicles with drunk drivers.
"The idea is to make sure that at least the co-passengers would stop those who are drunk from driving the vehicle," said a traffic official.

Zebra crossings
The zebra crossing is used across the world. The crossing is characterised by longitudinal stripes on the road, parallel to the flow of the traffic, in a light and dark colour alternately. The stripes are typically measure 16 in x 2 ft. If there are no additional traffic lights, pedestrians always have the right to walk past a zebra crossing. But when traffic lights are used, pedestrians only have priority when the signal is green.
