Pay compensation to parents of missing child, BMC told

The Bombay High Court on Wednesday told the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) that it will have to pay compensation of minimum Rs 10 lakh to the parents of a new-born child, which went missing from the government-run Sion Hospital on January 1 this year.

The judges asked the civic body to tell the court on Thursday how much compensation it was ready to pay to Mohan and Mohini Nerulkar, the parents of the missing child.

The court also asked the Deputy Commissioner of Police Zone IV who is heading the Special Investigation Team (SIT), which was set up to fetch the child, to remain present in the court.

Nerurkars' baby (a boy) was stolen by an unidentified woman from Lokmanya Tilak Hospital - also known as Sion Hospital - on the morning of January 1. Mohini Nerurkar had delivered the child only two days earlier.

According to her version, she left the baby on her bed as went to the bathroom. No nurse/ward boy was around, but an unknown woman assured her that she would look after the child. When she returned, the woman and the child were missing.

When police failed to find the woman and the child, Nerurkars moved the High Court. The division bench of Justices Bilal Nazki and AR Joshi was not happy with the probe report filed by SIT.

"Any clerk can file such reports," Justice Nazki said, asking S Baviskar, DCP, who heads SIT to remain present tomorrow.
