BMC, police issue high tide alert for Valentine's Day and warn couples to keep away from seaside spots

Steer clear of popular seaside lovers' spots like Bandstand, Chowpatty and Marine Drive on Valentine's Day. The BMC's disaster management department issued a high tide alert yesterday.

Bandstand at Bandra has witnessed many cases of drowning in the recent past, when several young couples got trapped on the rocks during high tide.

Prakash George, senior inspector, Bandra police station, has deployed police personnel at Bandstand to keep couples from venturing towards the rocks during high tide.

George has also requested local fishermen, who are accomplished swimmers, to prepare for a quick response in case of an accident.

Security of spots frequented by the youth, including colleges, cinema houses, and shopping malls, especially those selling Valentine cards and gifts, have been beefed up across the city.

Chief Fire Officer P D Khargupikar said any high tide alert should be taken seriously. "We should not take the sudden rise in sea level during high tide lightly.

The rocks and concrete torpedoes become slippery, the currents become more forceful. The chances of an accident taking increases manifold," said Khargupikar.

Zonal Deputy Commissioner Niket Kaushik said, "Though we will be on an alert, we won't indulge in moral policing."
