Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi ended his four day-long padyatra through villages in western-UP, and held a rally in Aligarh on Saturday, where he declared that land was being acquired in the state for builders, to set up golf courses and car racing tracks while farmers who dared to demand their dues, had to face bullets.
Gandhi said if the rich want to give up their land they are given good prices but the poor are given meager compensation and discriminated against.
"But in UP, farmers are forced to surrender their land. Many a times they aren't aware that their land is being acquired until the time the government arrives to displace them," he said.
Gandhi who is seeking to revive the Congress in Uttar Pradesh hopes to make land the main agenda for the 2012 UP polls.
