Ramabai firing: court postpones verdict

The Mumbai sessions court ON Monday deferred pronouncement of verdict in the 1997 Ramabai Ambedkar Nagar police firing incident in which 10 persons had died.

Additional sessions judge S Y Kulkarni postponed the hearing till April 6 after an accused in another case, related to the same incident, have applied for transfer of his case to Kulkarni's court.

Manohar Kadam, a State Reserve Police Force officer, was tried by the sessions judge for allegedly ordering firing without provocation on a Dalit mob protesting "desecration" of Dr Ambedkar's statue.

Ten persons died and several others were injured in the firing, and Kadam was suspended following protests.

Police had also booked some members of the mob on rioting and other charges. The cases against them are pending before another sessions court.

An accused in the rioting case, who himself was injured in the firing and a witness in the case against Kadam, has applied for transfer of his case to ASJ Kulkarni's court.

Judge S Y Kulkarni on Monday said that he would wait till the other judge decides on the transfer application.
