The murderers of senior citizens Charan Kundanani (80), who had retired from civil practice at the High Court 10 years ago and his wife Kamla Kundanani (69), residents of Sahar, Andheri (E), were caught and brought to book on March 2. Charan had been confined to his home for the past five years due to health reasons. A lady named Tarmati alias Bhabhi worked with the couple for 29 years, while a boy named Amitkumar Bharathi (18) was employed to help Kundanani around 20 days ago. Amit along with his trusted accomplices Sikhander Valmiki (22) and Sudhir Valmiki alias Golu (20) had entered the flat and killed both Kundanani and his wife on February 26 at around 12.30 pm.
"They were expecting to find valuable but, in reality they managed to get their hands on only Rs 1,500 and some gold bangles," said Anand Bhoir, PSI, Andheri police.
A team of policemen including Anand Bhoir, Tondare, Vishwas More, Dinkar Vavhad, Deshmukh, Prashant Yerunkar had brought sketches of the absconding Amit to a village in Fatehpur, UP. These sketches were obtained from the watchmen of the building where Kundanani stayed. They were the ones through whom Amit was employed at the Kundanani residence. Bhoir said, "We went to the village in civilian clothes, in chappals and half pants. We showed the sketches to only young boys between the ages of 8 to 9, because showing it to adults would raise suspicion and would cause the culprits to flee. One boy recognised Amit and said he played drums at the village sometimes. So the boy pointed out where Amit would be. We caught him and he confessed. He also named his accomplices whom we caught later in the interiors about eight kilometers from there."
