Local party workers blamed Congress for the murder and created tension in the area. A police officer said, “We have registered a case under Section 302 (murder) of IPC. A personal, political or business enemy could have done it. We are investigating the case from all possible angles.”
Gunjal alias Pappu, a resident of Moriwali area in Ambarnath, was the corporator of ward number 41. He was working as an MIDC civil and labour contractor and had also hired bodyguards for his safety.
Gunjal went to a nearby salon to get his beard shaved at 9.30 am on Friday but decided to leave his bodyguards behind. While returning, at least two bike borne assailants intercepted his bike and attacked him with swords and knives on his head in front of Moriwali school.
He was stabbed several times. The accused then fled the scene and Gunjal was rushed to hospital.
As Gunjal’s health deteriorated, he was shifted from Central Line Hospital in Ulhasnagar to Sridevi hospital in Kalyan, where after four hours of treatment he was declared dead.
